U.S. Involvement  1898  July 28 th  American’s invaded Puerto Rico to prevent Puerto Ricans from creating a new government

Did they justify their actions?  No  They had specific motives  Agriculture  Naval Bases  Panama Canal

U.S. Motives  Agriculture  Could be very profitable for the U.S.  Coffee and sugar plantations  Naval Base  Created a secure U.S. naval station in the Caribbean  In the future they could build the Panama Canal  Wanted to take possessions from Spain

Reaction of the Population  Puerto Ricans did not oppose the Americans coming into their land  The U.S. arrival created:  Public school systems  US Protection  Sanitary networks  Dr. M. G. Braumbaugh formed the Department of Education, and was the first commissioner of Education.
