Grade 9 – Physical & Life Science 2013/2014 Introduction

What About This Course  Year Long Course (2 semesters).  Successful students will receive 1 science credit.  The course will cover topics from all three main branches of science.  Chemistry, Biology and Physics.  All lessons will take place here in the Physics Lab.  Laboratory investigations and demonstrations form a huge part of this course.  You are encouraged to exercise your inquiry skills and express yourself.  ALL laboratory rules must be read and agreed upon before you can partake in lessons within the Lab.  You should read articles on the internet about new scientific discoveries and generally keep up to date with the wonderful world of science.

Grading  Finals (30%) – Exam + Final Project.  Term Project Work (30%) – large homework assignments based on a units scientific concepts & linked to our real world: Science in Society, Technology & Environment – (STE)  Laboratory Reports (15%) – Reports on designated major experiments. Usually typed reports but also there will be oral reports and presentations.  Quizzes (20%) - Short assessments which assess knowledge learned over a full unit.  Participation (5%) - Deducted points for speaking Chinese, not doing short homework questions, Breaking lab rules.

Participation Grade  Each Students begins the year on 100 points.  With each “crime” you will be deducted points.  You will only get the full 5% if you finish the year on 90+ points.  Not doing Homework questions: -10 points  Speaking Chinese: -5points  Breaking lab rules: -5 points for small offences. More serious offences will be treated differently (detentions, suspensions etc).

How do I get an A???  Listen to Mr. Doyle.  Ask Mr. Doyle many many questions.  Always try your best with homework.  Always speak English or try to speak English.  Be very friendly but also professional with your learning buddies and laboratory group members.  Follow Lab report guidelines and Project Guidelines correctly. (Do not leave any section out).  Keep clean organized notes. But do not take down everything Mr. Doyle says. Listen to his instructions.  Revise content every night and practice any calculations often in addition to doing homework.  Buy me (Mr. Doyle) Presents
