Presentation transcript:

CUTTING -Don’t fire pilot arc into air -Start cutting from edge of workpiece -Sparks should come out from bottom of piece. If they spray on the top, you are moving the torch too fast or don’t have enough power to fully penetrate workpiece -Hold torch lightly on metal or just off metal. The arc transfers to workpiece once torch is within 1/8” of workpiece. Holding torch firmly to workpiece causes nozzle to stick and makes smooth cutting difficult. -Pull torch through the cut. Pulling is easier than pushing. -When cutting thin material, reduce amps until you get the best quality cut.

Piercing -Hold the torch so that the nozzle is about 1/16 th ” away from the workpiece before pushing the start button. -Hold torch at an angle to the workpiece away from yourself, then slowly roll it to a vertical position. Make sure the torch is pointed away from you and people around you! -Start the cut an angle rather than upright position. This method permits the hot metal to escape to one side rather than splashing back against the nozzle and user. -When the pierce is complete, proceed with the cut.

Common Cutting Faults The workpiece is not totally penetrated. Causes may be: - current is too low - cut speed is too high - torch parts are worn - metal being cut is too thick Slag forms on bottom of the cut. Causes may be: - cutting speed is too low - torch parts are worn - metal being cut is too thick - current is too low

Sequence of Operation -Connect gas supply to regulator on power unit. (Oxygen) -Select cutting current with AMPS knob. -Connect work cable to workpiece and position torch on the piece. -Turn machine power on. -Depress plasma start switch on torch -Begin cutting procedure. Proper Safety Attire -Welding gloves- Jacket - Safety glasses- Colored shield
