Introduction about the Saxons’ SAILING AND SHIPS The Angles, Saxons and Jutes were warrior tribes – men who lived in Germany, close to the North sea. For many years, they had been raiding Britain’s coasts and the Romans built forts and a fleet to keep them at bay.

Their Ships Their ships were very, very long and could fit over40 people on the one ship. They had a dragon or that sort of thing that is scary on the front of their ships to scare their enemies away. They had massive sails, nearly as long as the ship but much taller. The ships were always a dark colour and were normally very dark brown but were sometimes black or just dark brown.

Sailing They needed over 40 oars men to make the ship go at the start. They had to oar day and night no stop but they did take turns so they didn’t get too tired. The people that were going to oar in the day slept in the night time and the people that were going to oar in the night slept in the day time. They had to sail over 2 weeks to arrive where they wanted too. Then, when they did arrive they had to get out and start fighting right away otherwise they would get killed and wouldn’t get what they came for. So all that rowing would be done for nothing.

Introduction about Sutton Hoo Sutton Hoo is a lovely place in Suffolk for people that want to know more about the Saxon’s ships and sailing. If you go and visit you will find yourself being a ‘know it all’ about the Saxon’s ships and sailing. You could tell all of your friends about what you learnt and will be the top of your class in the Saxon’s ships and sailing. Sutton Hoo is a good place to take your children if they are 7 or over because they might not understand the information that is given. (That is just an idea.)

About Sutton Hoo Sutton Hoo is a archaeologist site for Saxon ships. It has loads of mounds which they have mostly uncovered. But in 1939 they were exploring the biggest mound. If you look at the next slide you will see what they discovered. It was really interesting. It was big, bigger and even more bigger than anyone had dug up before!!!

What did they find? In 1939 archaeologists explored the large mound and discovered a ship buried in the mound. The ship was under the soil. It had clearly rotted away, but the shape of it was still there. It was 27 metres long and 4.25 metres wide at its widest point. Almost 90 feet long and 15 feet wide. It would have taken about 20 oars men on either side of the boat so it would have been a lot of hard work. They would have been very tired by the end of it.
