If you are not, go to Lesson 1, page 2 and follow the instructions.) The following lessons are designed to teach you how to navigate the online publishing world. The rules are many and all are important to keep your articles from crashing and burning.

Lesson 7 Photoshop - Advanced Photo Techniques Side-by-side photo Procedures

Requirements  A copy of Photoshop  Photos that you are planning on using in your article.

There is a video presentation for this process that you can watch by clicking on or going to hotoshop_Ashley/Photoshop_Ash ley.html and downloading the 26 minute video file. hotoshop_Ashley/Photoshop_Ash ley.html hotoshop_Ashley/Photoshop_Ash ley.html

Joining multiple photos together so they can show as a side-by-side single photo Make sure the background color is white so the margin between the photos will be white.

First open the photos you want to put side-by-side. I am showing 2 photos for clarity Next decide what size you want the final photo to be. Since we like large photos we want the photo to be full width which is 400 pixels. Now ÷ the width (400) by the number of photos (2) = 200. Subtract 1 pixel for each photo for the white space between the photos (2 photos = 2 pixels). Subtract 2 from 400 = 398. ÷ 398 by 2 (# of photos) = 199. This is the width you will crop the 2 photos to. So what you have is 199 x 2= =400. The height is proportionate to the visual look of the photo. I usually use 450 pixels high for fashion photos.

Set crop sizes Notice that once you click on the crop icon, a tool bar opens above. In that tool bar are presets you can type in for Width: and Height: I put in for this example 199 for width and 450 for height. This will constrain the crop tool to only those dimensions.

Maximize the photo you are working on Now click on the square that is the maximize icon to make the individual photo full screen

This is what you will get. Now use the crop tool with the presets put in the Width and Height and outline what you want to crop Double click or click the check icon to make the crop

Now is the time to correct the photo Do whatever corrections you want to the document. Since it is now a smaller photo, the changes will take much less time to accomplish. In this photo, we will need to brighten and sharpen it. However if all your photos have similar needs, you can do them all at once by making a MACRO

You should have placed all your photos in the same folder. Open that folder and choose them all and click open.

They will open like this which is called Cascade

You now want to choose Window/Arrange/Tile

And this is what you will see… Choose the top left photo and maximize it by clicking on the square box.

And this is what you will see… Choose the Cropping tool and put 199 pixels for the width and 450 pixels for the height and crop the photo so it looks good to you.

Repeat with all photos

Choose Image/Adjustments/Levels

Note the large gap to the right in the light area of the histogram in this example. This means the photo is too dark and needs lighting.

You need to move the right triangle to the left, to the start of the histogram. You can click on Preview button to see before & after views.

Note - if all your photos on the desktop are similarly dull or similarly blurred or whatever (which often happens since the same camera under the same conditions usually took the photos). You could make a Macro to adjust the most average of the photos. Go to Making Macros in Photoshop Lesson - 6

Congratulations!  You are now done with Lesson #7 and that’s all there is… If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please them to If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please them to ThanksLawrence
