Areas of Focus  Main entry area will be redesigned As well as….  The school’s cafeteria

Existing Issues with Spaces  After interviewing several people at NCHS several issues were brought up: Reception Desk needed in entry Remove solar boat from entry area if possible Concessions needed near gym School store More interesting color scheme in both spaces Remove classroom in cafeteria if possible Lounge area in cafeteria (quiet space) Change of existing furniture

Concept for Spaces  Combine the metropolitan feel of Minneapolis with the calming effect of nature  Focus on characteristics of “biomimicry,” nature inspired design, that may cause space to increase productivity and improve well-being among students  Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)  Utilize curvilinear lines that mimic nature for furniture and flooring  Add strategically placed straight lines that mimic the Minneapolis skyline for graphics  Materials and color scheme that represent NCHS  All throughout the spaces students, staff, and guests will be able to stimulate their senses

Newly Designed Entry  No major construction done to reduce environmental impact by keeping existing space similar  Change in flooring with curved lines for more visual interest  Park benches add to bring more a more natural feel to space and allow for seating  Large mural of Minneapolis added to East wall behind park benches  Curved reception desk connected to concessions area  Quick stop- smaller version of school store also located at concessions area to sell merchandise  4 foot tall tables added near concessions for eating and gathering  Plants added  Colors reflect the calming feel of nature  Large glass sky light over space  Not pictured-Beautiful image of Aurora Borealis 10’ AFF

Other Images of Entry East wall of Entry with Minneapolis Graphic Glass skylight over Entry space (outside view)

Newly Designed Cafeteria  Repeat of Colors and curved flooring to unify spaces  Variety of table shapes and colors  Storage added for tables when not in use  Large school store in center  Separated lounge/study area for students who need to work quietly  Large curved half-wall added near kitchen to break up lounge area and establish lunch line space  Plants added near lounge  Large bold graphics on walls

Other Images of Cafeteria Entry to School store in Cafeteria Lounge/ Study area

Materials Chosen for Space Blues, greens, yellows, and browns for color choices Very simple furniture with curved lines Natural looking materials with calming colors Sustainable materials such as 3-Form and recycled glass

Result  The new design that mixes the metropolitan feel of Minneapolis with the calming effect of nature was a perfect solution to the existing design issues at NCHS  Students, staff, and guests now have a concessions area and school store to promote school spirit  A quiet study and lounge area provided a perfect space for students to work comfortably  The spaces have a greater connection to the outdoors due to more natural light, plants, and calming colors  The result was a space that would allow anyone to stimulate their senses and imagination
