Telling Locations of Things in a Room Unit 13 Notes

Using Classifiers to Tell Locations  Flat objects  Cylindrical objects  Their location (on the wall, on a shelf)  Their number (often including how things are arranged: many things stacked, several things in a row).

-Pictures on wall (palm out) -Cabinets doors (palm out)

Refrigerator, dishwasher, dresser (palm out)

Kitchen island, counter top, sink, cabinet, sofa (palm down and slide)

Chair (double x on one hand palm down)

Window, mirror (palm in)

Table, bed (palm down)

Long, thin windows, built-in oven, grandfather clock (palm out and slide)

Vase, potted plant, table lamp (“A” on top of “B” palm down)

Describing rooms  Identify the room and begin your description from the perspective of the doorway.  Describe the shape of the room.  Identify the furniture or features in the room, starting with the most noticeable.  After identify each feature or piece of furniture, indicate its location by using classifiers or pointing.  Do same for each part of room using orderly or logical sequence, i.e., from left to right, from near to far, or area by area.

Room Project!!!  You will design your bedroom (the way it is or your dream room).  Use manilla paper, construction paper, computer designs, etc. BE CREATIVE!  Be detailed with patterns and shapes.  On the back of your room paper:  Put your name and period #  Write the gloss for how you would describe your room using the grammar rules you learned for describing a room.
