Active Listening Whenever I attend a lecture or a conference, I go with the intention of finding at least one idea that I can implement or act on. Helps me stay awake and pay attention Listening more active than simply taking notes Finding more actionable ideas is a bonus
Blogs and Journals Journaling assignments, reflective learning assignments, graded discussion groups and student blogs give students a place to reflect on what they have learned.
Discussion Assignments Discussion board assignments are great and get students to bring up ideas and participate in ways that they may not in a traditional classroom (shyness, etc.)
Reflection Essay Assignments Reflection Assignments are great ways to reinforce learning at the end of specific topics In a demonstration of the Etudes LMS at Southwest College (yesterday, 5/12), Vivie Sinou showed that after each major assignment, she had a reflective learning essay. Too many such assignments can clutter the LMS
Online Journals and Blogs For concepts and skills classes such as introductory CSIT courses, I use student blogs. Typical assignment for a class that meets twice a week: Make 3 blog entries per week about some new idea or concept your learned from lecture or your homework and explain how you will use it in your everyday life.
Student Blogs and LMS Etudes Student blogging section is not a standard part of Etudes and must be added by requesting it from Vivie Sinou Moodle Standard under Profiles section Mahoodle (Moodle and Mahara combined) Mahara E-Portfolio Blog is better and student can have multiple blogs and publish in views WebStudy Built in to both LMS and integrated E-Portfolio
