MAKING PRESENTATIONS

CEDARView and This Presentation When the purpose of a thing is not known, the abuse is inevitable. Why CEDARView ? Why did YOU join CEDARView ? What we’ll discuss today:  Who is presenting?  What are you presenting?  How should you present?  Preparing for an effective presentation  How do you know a good presentation?

Who is presenting? The personality of the presenter drives the presentation – e.g. if Wole Soyinka makes a grammatical mistake, not even the queen will notice Sharpening the person will automatically increase the probability of making a good presentation Be sure you want to go ahead with the presentation and be sure you know what you’re talking about

What are you presenting? Content is as important as the entire process of making a presentation Apply the 80/20 Principle by spending 80% of your presentation time on 20% of the content which forms the core of your points Never accept an undefined presentation, except you’re given a “free hand” to speak on your core competence Make sure your content fits the context of the “environment”

How should you present? There are no hard and fast rules – only unique styles - but a few tips apply across board: Know your audience Be conscious of “audience psychology ” Know, and keep within your time allocation Know what conditions you’ll be presenting under – multimedia support, equipment, software tools, delivery medium, etc

How should you present?

Preparing for an effective presentation Research is the key to unique presentations Choose your words, tenses, materials, pictures and title (if you’re not given one) appropriately Employ the powers of IT, as much as you can (layout, delivery mode, tools, etc) Never rush into any presentation You may like my rule, “ ’Gbenga Sesan, prepare as if you’re speaking to the UN ”

How to know a good presentation You have the audience’s full attention Presentation prompts responses or questions Presentation is smooth – timely and fully delivered When you say “thank you” and drop the microphone, you feel like patting yourself on the back The original purpose of the presentation is achieved on the long term
