Warm Up 1. Why do we need food? 2. How does food get from our stomach to our cells?

Warm Up Where are most complex carbs located in the food pyramid? Where are most simple carbs located in the food pyramid? (use p. 354)

Nutrition – ISN p. 17 How do we use all that food? Why does it matter what I eat? (p. 354 in Text book)

Nutrient: Any substance which provides the body with energy or building materials.

Calorie: A unit of energy. High calorie foods store lots of energy

Six Types of Nutrients 1. Carbohydrates – The body’s major source of energy. Carbs get broken down into glucose, which is sent to the mitochondria so the energy can be released.

Carbohydrates

Six Types of Nutrients Simple Carbs – Known as sugars (release energy quickly). Complex Carbs – Known as starches (release energy slowly).

Six Types of Nutrients 2. Fats - Provides energy, insulation, and forms cell membranes.

Fats

Six Types of Nutrients 3. Proteins – Materials necessary for building and repairing cell parts. Made of smaller units called amino acids

Proteins

Six Types of Nutrients 4. Vitamins – Aid chemical reactions in the cells, but provide no energy. (p.349 in book)

Vitamins

Six Types of Nutrients 5. Minerals - Nutrients that are not made by Living things. (p.350 in book) Examples: Iron, Sodium, calcium, potassium.

Minerals

Six Types of Nutrients 6. Water - Is the most important nutrient -Used in cytoplasm, Makes up 70% of the body’s weight

Water

On p. 16…. 1. If a student ate the entire bag, how many servings would they get? 2. If a student ate the entire bag, how many calories would they consume?

3. If a student ate 3 servings, what would the total percentage of fat be? 4. If a student ate 2 servings, what would the total grams of sodium be?
