It was established by President John Adams in The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution It is recognized as the national library of the United States and it is the world's largest library

The Library of Congress Collections More than 33 million cataloged books and other print materials in 460 languages. More than 63 million manuscripts. The largest rare book collection in North America; and the world's largest collection of legal materials, films, maps, sheet music and sound recordings.

The Library of Congress Online Catalog contains approximately 14 million records representing books, serials, computer files, manuscripts, cartographic materials, music, sound recordings, and visual materials.
