Torque Do You Understand The Nomenclature (Terms)

 Torque Explained Video Torque Explained Video

What is Torque?

What is Torque?  It is a force to turn or rotate things.  Torque is a necessary requirement in automotive for attaching components to each other.  Torque is also used to describe the pulling power of an engine.

How Do You Measure Torque? Distance Force

How Do You Measure Torque? TTorque is measured in: AA. Pound Foot (standard) 1. 1 pound of pressure one foot away from object you are turning BB. Newton Meter (metric) 1. 1-Kilogram of pressure one meter away from the object your are turning

Why Do We Need To Know About Torque  1. Different size bolts can withstand only a certain amount of twisting. a. different grades of bolts of the same size will withstand different amounts of twisting.  2. Different materials that are being held together can only withstand a certain amount of torque. a. this torque in many cases will be a lot less than what the bolt can withstand.

Example 2

Ex Credit  What stresses could an object be subjected to when bolted together?  Research the answer and turn in to the teacher on a separate paper.
