Orientation to the Workshop Train the Trainers Montreal February 2010

Introductions Name Institutional Affiliation What is your favourite DLI product and why?

Agenda What is the training model for DLI? Why this retreat? What is the program? What are the expectations?

The DLI Training Model Has a formal organizational structure through the DLI External Advisory Committee. Built around a set of principles to guide training activities and investments. Contains a curriculum based on data knowledge, skills and attitudes. Delivered through peer-to-peer instruction.

DLI Post-secondary Sector Statistics Canada External Advisory Committee Atlantic Region Quebec Region Ontario Region Western Region Education Committee Regional Training Coordinators

Job Categories for Training Regional Training Coordinators Trainers Instructors Described in the “Education / Training Structure” document.

Regional Training Coordinators Two Regional Training Coordinators (RTCs) per region, who are selected by EAC members from the region and the region’s current RTCs. Responsible for identifying the training needs in their region and communicating these needs to the EAC Education Committee, including the region’s training budget and coordinating national training activities.

Regional Training Coordinators Responsible for organizing workshops in their region, including the content of their local region’s training program. May also contribute as trainers, but they may decide that the administrative duties associated with training keep them busy enough.

Trainers The role of the trainers is to provide substantive instruction in their region’s training program based on recognized expertise. They may be called upon to teach in other regions because of their expertise. The trainers should demonstrate sound pedagogical skills.

Instructors This group consists of DLI Contacts and data services staff supporting DLI who are called upon from time to time to make presentations at regional workshops. One of the training principles endorses the involvement of DLI Contacts and data services staff in instruction: “as one learns, one will teach.”

Why are we at this workshop? Enrich the pool of trainers in DLI Pass along the training philosophy and pedagogical approach behind DLI training Identify personal training strengths Develop working relationships Plan for the development of new skills Discuss each region’s training strengths and needs Plan for the development of new training materials

Why are we at this workshop? LEADERSHIP! The success of DLI training is dependent on individuals who care about data services as an emerging field in librarianship and who are willing to share their knowledge and skills with their colleagues to keep everyone in DLI current.

Past Train the Trainer Workshops Let’s look at some of the people who participated in past Train the Trainer Workshops.
