English Unit hours 40% overall GCSE grade Tuesday January 10 th – am Section A – Romeo & Juliet. Students will answer 1 three part question based on Character, Performance and Theme. They will be provided with an extract to use and will also need to refer to one other part of the play. Section B – Of Mice and Men. Students will answer 1 three part question based on Character, Language and Theme. They will be provided with an extract to use and will also need to refer to one other part of the novel. Section C – Writing. Students will have a choice of 2 tasks. Students will not be provided with a copy of either texts for this exam!

English Unit hours Section A (Romeo & Juliet): Students will firstly be asked about how one character is presented in their given extract. They need to think about what is revealed about the character and support this with evidence from the extract. The second part of the question focuses on performance so students need to comment on the movement, facial expression, gesture and positioning of characters. When commenting on Theme students must make clear comparisons between the example they have chosen from the play and the extract provided.

English Unit hours Section B (Of Mice and Men): Students will be asked about how one character is presented in their given extract. They need to think about what is revealed about the character and support this with evidence from the extract. The second part of the question focuses on language so students need to think of this as how language presents the idea / character or event. As the focus is language students must select language choices and also comment on what type of language it is. E.g.. Verbs, pronouns, imperatives etc. When commenting on Theme students must make clear comparisons between the example they have chosen from the play and the extract provided as well as making links to the novel’s social/cultural context.
