Magnets

Magnets are everywhere. Earth! In fact you live on the biggest magnet around …. If you have ever used a computer, microwave oven, or stereo speakers, you have used magnets!

Magnet Facts 1. Magnets are made from a rock called magnetite or lodestone. 2. Magnetite attracts iron and steel.

3. Magnets have two poles - the North Pole and the South Pole. 4. On a bar magnet the poles are on the ends.

5. Magnets are strongest at the poles.

6. Attract means to pull something to you. Magnets pull things made of iron and steel.

7. Opposites Attract The North Pole is attracted to the South Pole. The South Pole is attracted to the North Pole.

8. Repel means to push away. A North Pole repels another North Pole.

9. A force is a push or a pull. 10. A magnetic force is the pulling force of a magnet.

Find items that are attracted to magnets.

10. A compass uses a magnet to tell direction. A compass has a magnet inside that moves the arrow. The arrow on a compass always points north.

12. Magnets can have different sizes and shapes.

11. A magnet ’ s force can pull through other objects. Try this: 1. Fill a clear cup with water. 2. Put a paper clip inside the cup of water. 3. Use a magnet on the outside of the cup. Can you move the paper clip?
