Freshstart Facilitator Training Session 4: Stay Quit

Session 4 – Objectives Recover from slips Practice for tough situations in the future Discuss special concerns related to quitting Review health benefits over time Learn tips to stay tobacco-free

Session 4 – Progress Share & Review Individual Attention and Review Share progress or struggles since Session 3 Discuss homework

Session 4 – Staying Quit Handling strong urges months or years after quitting Review your reasons for quitting There’s not such a thing of “just one cigarette” Ride out the desire to smoke. It will pass Avoid alcohol Manage weight by eating healthy and exercising

Session 4 – Recovering From Slips What do you do if you have a cigarette? A slip is a one- time corrected mistake A relapse is going back to smoking The difference between a slip and relapse is within your control.

Session 4 –Tips to Stay Quit Review your Freshstart materials regularly Inquire about quitlines Carry your reasons for quitting Spend more time in places that you can’t smoke Save cigarette money to reward yourself Get your teeth cleaned and whitened Share your sense of pride with others Start a new hobby Make your quit date an anniversary and celebrate Remove anything that reminds you of smoking
