And other Architecutures of Barcelona By: Breeana Graham Barcelona’s La Familia Sagrada Temple Expiatori de ma Sagrada Familia “Expitory Temply of the Holy Family”

The Church’s First Architects Josep Bocabella Catalan publisher who originally conceived La Familia Sagrada. Francesc de Paula Villar Proposed a simple church in traditional neo-gothic style. Josep Bocabella

Antoni Gaudi (1852–1926) Took over as lead architect because of arguments between Bocabella and Villar. Changed project entirely; used opportunity to express his strong religious and nationalist feelings. Devoted life to finishing La Familia Sagrada for 40 years. Project remained unfinished after sudden death. “My client is not in a hurry.” -Antoni Gaudi

After Gaudi’s Death Domènech Sugranyes Took over as lead architect but was interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in The building remained intact during the war, but in 1936 many of its models and plans were destroyed by Catalan anarchists, who saw the church as a symbol of the old, conservative religion that had no place in the new Barcelona. Construction started again in late 1950’s.

Passion Façade Nativity Façade Glory Façade La Familia Sagrada Façade’s Each facade has three portals representing the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love.

Passion Façade Located on the Western side of the Church, the Passion façade is dedicated to the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. This façade is nearly complete. It is decorated with angular sculptures done by Josep Maria Subirach. Upper Picture: Sculpture of Jesus being flogged. Left Hand Picture: The Great doors of Passion Façade, it’s printed with words from the Bible in various languages including Catalan.

Nativity Façade Located on the eastern side of the church, the Nativity Façade is dedicated the birth of Jesus Christ. This façade was finished before the Spanish Civil War broke out and has the most influence of Antoni Gaudi. The Adoration of the Magi, the Adoration of the Shepherds, and the Coronation and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is depicted in the façade. A Cypress tree, represented by a spiral is symbolizes the tree of life.

Glory Façade The Glory Façade has yet to be built. It is estimated that the entire Familia Sagrada will be commpleted by 2026, however, some have reason to believe that it will take much longer. eventually serve as the main entrance to the Familia Sagrada. dedicated to the general order of creation. It will include 7 columns to symbolize the gifts from the Holy Spirit and present the virtues against sin. It will have many sculpted stone clouds bearing the Credo written in large letters. There will be bell towers that will be consecrated to the apostles St. Andrew, St. Peter, St. Paul and St. James the Great.

The Towers Each tower is to represent one of the 12 apostles with their names and a sculpture. Gaudi also intended to add a tower in the center, with a great cross representing Jesus. Eight of an intended eighteen towers are completed.. Then surrounding the great cross, 4 shorter towers will be built to represent the four evangelist by their animal.

The Church Interior At the top, you can climb around the walls and into other towers and enjoy partial views of Barcelona through a jumble of latticed stonework, ceramic decoration, carved buttresses and a variety of sculpture. Upper Picture: You can either take elevators to the top of the façades or take one of the beautifully made stairways.
