Matthew Logan Benefits of Trees

Matthew Logan Plant Well The right tree for the right location! Considerations: What is the soil composition ? i.e.. pH, organic matter, nutrient availability How much growth space is available? Above ground and below? How much sunlight is available? How much water is available? What is the purpose for the tree? i.e.wind block, shade, feature, privacy, habitat, etc.

Matthew Logan Selection Process Avoid trees that: have bad root structure i.e. girdling roots have too many leaders have been tip pruned extensively i.e. apical pruning are too big. Small trees tolerate transportation and transplanting stress better have bark wounds

Matthew Logan Too large? Girdled roots Bark wound

Matthew Logan Improper Planting Techniques Common mistakes: Planting the tree too deep or too shallow Hole not dug wide enough Sides of hole glazed by shovel Basket left on Burlap left wrapped around trunk Newly planted tree not flooded to release air pockets Trunk guards, braces and guys left on too long

Matthew Logan

Mulch Mulch…What is it good for? Alleviates compaction Moderates temperature Retains moisture Lessens competition Adds organic matter to soil through decomposition Protects trunk and roots from mechanical damage

Matthew Logan Prune Properly To understand pruning you must understand CODIT C- compartmentalization O- of D- decay I- in T- trees
