Okay, let us begin our discussion on Writing What are the implications of writing well?

Writing serves many purposes When we write… Writing requires strong decision- making skills Good writing skills Why is this important? We are constantly making decisions about what we want to say (content), how we want to say it (language), and how one thought will flow to the next (structure). Why should you care? Help you express your thoughts and ideas more clearly Let’s take a look!

Effective expression Writing is often a challenging and frustrating experience; however, the ability to express your ideas clearly, carefully and professionally will be important to you throughout your college career and in your chosen career field as well. In this Unit, you will read about the elements of effective writing and you will learn how to construct powerful paragraphs. You will also visit the Kaplan University Writing Center and learn about Kaplan's plagiarism policy and how to avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism.

AND You may fully understand the reading assignments and activities provided in the unit, but your online instructors will never know unless you are able to communicate what you know in written form

In addition to the writing you will do in this class, all of your college classes will require you to write essays, research papers, problem-solving proposals, presentations, or some other type of written project assignment. For this reason, you will need to have writing skills, including understanding the purpose of writing, the steps involved, and the choices you will face during the writing process. When you are given a writing assignment for school, you should first determine the purpose of the writing (other than to get a passing grade, another logical purpose). Some papers will be designed for simple research, which may include informing, explaining, describing a process, etc. Position papers require that you persuade, argue, and analyze an issue.

To help you achieve your purpose and reach your audience, you have to determine what form is most appropriate. Different forms include, but are not limited to, lists, paragraphs, essays, reports, presentations, letters, memos and .

As you write paragraphs: make sure to begin with a clear Topic Sentence (a sentence that clearly indicates the main idea or topic of your paragraph) several Supporting Sentences & Details (sentences that develop the main topic and give examples and illustrations) Concluding Sentence (a final sentence that summarizes the main point of the paragraph and clearly ties back to the topic sentence/main idea)

Take paragraphs… This week you will write two different paragraphs. Write a complete paragraph about a person who has influenced you in positive ways. Focus on at least one way in which this person has made an important impact upon you. Use specific ideas and examples to illustrate your points and make sure you follow the paragraph guidelines you read about in this unit.

What I am looking for… First a sentence or two of introduction. Make sure the topic sentence or main idea is clear. Use the writing center for examples. I can clearly see who is using the writing center for help and who is not.

Second paragraph… Share an Opinion Write a complete paragraph about the advantages and disadvantages of taking online classes. Use specific ideas and examples to illustrate your points and make sure you follow the paragraph guidelines you read about in this unit.

What I am looking for… Make sure in both paragraphs you include the topic sentence with thesis and a few supporting sentences. The second and third sentences are called supporting sentences. They are called "supporting" because they "support," or explain, the idea expressed in the topic sentence. Of course, paragraphs in English often have more than two supporting ideas. The paragraph above is actually a very short paragraph. At minimum, you should have at least five to seven sentences in your paragraph. See more,

Remember… Follow the guidelines listed on the Unit 4 template and make sure to proofread your work carefully. Use spell check…

Remember  Be concise and to the point.  And double space…

Always practice good grammar, punctuation, and composition. This shows that you’ve taken the time to craft your response and that you respect your classmates' work.

Then, Save the document frequently as you work, and remember that it is always a good idea to spell check your document and make corrections before saving for the final time. Note where you saved your document. When you are done, submit your document using the Dropbox directions

Remember… Tip: Spell check the paper before sending it. The Writing Center is a resource that you can use and I expect you to use this week

Again, writing a paragraph… Begin with a topic or thesis sentence. This is the main idea. Always add supporting sentences; examples are great. Do not give personal opinions unless directed to do so.

Plagiarism Next, we will review the plagiarism policy because a few students have expressed confusion about what plagiarism is and is not. So let’s go over the basics: Kaplan University considers academic honesty to be one of its highest values.

Some examples… Though not a comprehensive or exhaustive list, the following are some examples of dishonesty or unethical and unprofessional behavior:

Always include a citation to be sure Plagiarism: Using another person’s words, ideas, or results without giving proper credit to that person; giving the impression that it is the student’s own work. Any form of cheating on examinations. Altering academic or clinical records. Falsifying information for any assignments. Submitting an assignment(s) that was partially or wholly completed by another student.

What about an old assignment?  Submitting an assignment(s) for more than one class without enhancing and refining the assignment, and without first receiving instructor permission. In cases where previous assignments are allowed to be submitted for another class, it is the responsibility of the student to enhance the assignment with additional research and to also submit the original assignment for comparison purposes.

In essence, plagiarism is the theft of someone else’s ideas and work. Whether a student copies verbatim or simply rephrases the ideas of another without properly acknowledging the source, it is still plagiarism.

You have seen me mention sources with every project, right? Sources are the answer for avoiding plagiarism. Whenever you use someone else’s idea and/or words, include the source to avoid any problems

Even opinions from others? Sources include published primary and secondary materials, electronic media, and information and opinions gathered directly from other people.

A friend’s paper? Copying documentation from another student or from any other source without proper citation is a form of academic dishonesty, as is producing work substantially from the work of another.

If another student helps… Students must assume that collaboration in the completion of written assignments is prohibited unless explicitly permitted by the instructor. Students must acknowledge any collaboration and its extent in all submitted coursework. In other words, tell your professor!

Internet? Students are subject to disciplinary action if they submit as their own work a paper purchased from a term paper company or downloaded from the Internet. Kaplan University subscribes to a third-party plagiarism detection service, and reserves the right to check all student work to verify that it meets the guidelines of this policy. Do you all know what this means? Instructors send all papers to a company that checks for plagiarism.

Academic dishonesty is a serious offense and may result in the following sanctions: 1st offense: Failure of the assignment in which the action occurred. 2nd offense: Failure of the class in which the action occurred. 3rd offense: Expulsion or permanent dismissal from the University.

Thus, to represent another person's writing as your own is to misrepresent your own accomplishments. This is a type of fraud or deception.” Are we clear? Always cite the source when in doubt. They currently offer four modes of assistance for all Kaplan students: 1. Live Help: You may speak with a live tutor on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm ET and Thursday from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm ET. 2. Q & A Center: You may submit a writing question 24 hours a day. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours after your submission, you can retrieve an answer by returning to the Writing Center’s homepage and using the reference number provided when you submitted your question. 3.
