Presentation transcript:

 Between , an interest in religion in the U.S. increased.  This movement helped create Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches in the south.  The region became known as the “Bible Belt.”

 Tent revivals became very popular.  A revival is a meeting meant to interest people in religion.  These usually occurred at camp meetings and helped the Methodist Church grow.

 Leaders wanted to unite the different groups.  Primitive Baptists – believed that life happened according to a plan set in motion by God. Opposed missionary work and Sunday School.  Free Will Baptists – Believed people had free will. They liked missionary work and education.  The two groups joined together even though they had different views.

 Improvements in Georgia’s educational system helped the growth of the state.  Abraham Baldwin wrote out a plan for the first university in Georgia.  He felt that the a good education should not be just for the wealthy and that the government had a duty to provide education to everyone.  Up to this point, colleges were private and too expensive for the average person.

 The first school open to lower-income people.  The first public university in the U.S.  Held its first classes in September  Soon afterward, other states copied Georgia and began building public universities.

 After the Revolutionary War, the state of Georgia expanded and people began moving to northern Georgia.  State legislators wanted the capital to be moved further west.  1000 acres near the Ogeechee River was purchased for the new capital.  It was to be called Louisville after King Louis XVI, a French king who helped the patriots during the revolution.
