Skeletal System The Vertebral column
Outcomes By the end of this lesson, I will be able to: Know the structure of the vertebral column. Understand the role of the vertebral column. Know the names of the 5 regions of the vertebral column and number of bones.
The Vertebral Column The vertebral column (also known as the spine) is an S-shaped structure around which our ability to walk, run, and sleep is hinged.
Structure of the vertebral column The back is not made up of a single bone. It is composed of donut-shaped bones called vertebrae. These donut shaped structures are stacked one on top of the other to produce your vertebral column.
Structure of the vertebral column Between each vertebra, you have a disk of cartilage. When you bend over, there is a small amount of movement between each one. Because you have so many vertebra, a small amount of movement between each one allows a lot of movement overall.
Structure of the vertebral column Your spine is divided into five sections: 1.the cervical, 2.the thoracic, 3.the lumbar, 4.the sacrum, 5.and the coccyx.
Structure and function of the vertebral column TASK Label the vertebra using P.E to 16.
Points to remember How many pieces are there? 7, 12, 5, 5, 4. A little way to remember the names and numbers of the vertebral column: Colgate (7) - Cervical Toothbrushes (12) - Thoracic Leave (5)- Lumbar Shiny (5) - Sacrum Caps (4) - Coccyx
The Vertebral Column TASK 1.Draw a single vertebra and label this using P.E to 16.
