Welcome and description of the Meeting Objectives

WHAT DID WE ACHIEVE AT THE LAST TIME: The Work Flow UT UoB FORTH UoPSSSA Prototypes Taxonomy of locomotion mechanisms and matching with enabling technologies

IMPORTANT DECISIONS Are polychaete one potentially suitable animal model for devices capable of moving effectively in the gastrointestinal tract (or in other human cavities)?YES, but the “inchworm”-like too…

PROPOSAL FOR WORKING BETWEEN NOVEMBER 02 AND MARCH 03 Building a reasonable biomechanical model of polychaete and inchworms, and of the GI boundary conditions to guide the design of a working biomimetic device and estimate the influence of different technical solutions

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS (1/2) Which mechanism for body motion (peristaltic, moving wave, random? others?) Which type of legs and leg motion (piston-like, sweeping) ? Which type of adhesion mechanism (vacuum, hooks, glue, clamping)?

Which mechanical structure for the body (spine, balloon-like, others)? Which mechanical structure for the legs? Which shape, dimensions (total length, diameter) and other parameters (legs disposition, legs number, etc)? IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IMPORTANT QUESTIONS (2/2)

Selected Models: polychaete and inchworm-like transversal waves longitudinal waves Theoretical models: FORTH and SSSA Experimental set up: IHCI, UoT Prototypes: UBAH, UoP, SSSA, Forth IMPORTANT QUESTIONS (2/2)

WorkPackage Overview: Where we are Project Management Study of locomotion mechanisms of lower animal forms Modelling and design of artificial structures which replicate biological mechanisms Enabling technologies and principles for fabricating biomimetic components Understanding and replicating biological perception of lower animal forms Control strategy and control implementation Fabrication of prototypes of biomimetic locomotion machines Experiments on prototypes of biomimetic locomotion machines Dissemination and Implementation WP WP4 WP2 WP6 WP3 WP8 WP5 WP7 WP0

Where we are WP WP4 WP2 WP6 WP3 WP8 WP5 WP7 WP0 M1: Selection and design of the preferred biomimetic locomotion principle to be implemented M2: Selection and design of the perception-reaction strategy to be implemented M3: Fabrication of the biomimetic locomotion prototype (or BLU) M4: Testing of the biomimetic locomotion prototype and overall validation

Administrative and Scientific accomplishments Preparation of deliverables (month 6): Project Presentation – done DUP – in progress D1 – almost done; to be shared and accepted UoT  UoT + IHCI at Steinbeis University (with Novineon Healthcare technology as subcontract) – almost done Consortium Agreement – comments expected

Next Deliverables and Deadlines

BIOLOCH Review Meeting From Dr. Lacombe: Your project review will take place in Alicante (Spain) either on Monday 7 July or on Wednesday 9 July, the middle day of Tuesday 8 July being devoted to a Neuro-IT workshop to which you should also participate. The review event is coupled to the Twelfth Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting CNS*2003 from July 5 to July 7, also in Alicante. Please inform before end of February about the following issues: 1) whether your project makes a presentation at CNS on Monday 7th July (the project review duration is only 2 hours) 2) whether you have a preference for your review to be on Monday 7 or on Wednesday 9 July (we will try to take that into account, but without any promise of success at this stage)
