“BREAKING OUT” Why were Spain & Portugal leaders in European overseas expansion in the world?

Both had governments that were strong & well organized

Their governments were strong enough to collect taxes

Internal Order

They had “technology”

What is imperialism? The policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas.

European IMPERIALISM or why do you need colonies?

Raw materials

Market place for your goods

Source of revenue(through resources or taxes)

Bodies(Cheap labor force & bodies for military)

Land(for expansion & strategic points)

Source of national pride (greater status with other countries)

What became “Black Gold” to Europe by the 16th Century? Slaves from Africa!

WHY? Native Americans had no experience handling horses, cows or pigs that were new to them & died in captivity. Black Africans were excellent farmers & good at animal husbandry Black Africans had mining experience Black Africans were healthy & used to the climate which was similar to Africa There were plenty of them!
