Education Schools he studied in His impression about schools At the age of eleven, on 1 April 1851 Monet began his studies at the Le Havre school “college communal” which provided a classical education for the arts. The school was on Rue de la Maillereaye, next to Claude’s house. He was not interested in the school since he said “I was naturally undisciplined. The school always felt like a prison, I could never resign myself to living there, even four hours a day." In 1857, Monet’s mother passed away and he left school to live with his aunt. He began selling charcoal paintings to locals in the area. Site: www.monetalia.com

Marriage Camille Doncieux Alice Hoschede Claude Monet had two wives in his life. One was Camille Doncieux and the second was Alice Hoschede. In 1870, Camille Doncieux and Claude Monet married and they had two sons. Courbet was Monet's best man. Soon after the wedding, the Franco-Prussian War started and they left France and took refuge in England, London. Camille fell ill in 1876 and never fully recovered. Although she eventually gave birth to their second son, Michel, Camille's body was weak and she passed away on September 5, 1879 from tuberculosis. Monet painted Camille Monet, on her death bed. Camille's death was very difficult on Monet and he became very sad for several months. He was remarried in 1911 to Alice where she already had six children by her first husband. Career Life What was Monet’s Career Who got him interested about art Claude Monet was the father and the founder of Impressionism. His career life was longer than any other painter associated with the impressionist group. He never thought of becoming a painter until 1858 when he met Boudin, who encouraged him and gave him some lessons. His major aim was to concentrate on the optical impressions of nature since he said “I only draw what I see”. He began as a highly talented painter of outdoor scenes. Early in his career he started off painting landscapes but after the 1870s he started to focus more on changing the light of everyday objects. Every painter associated with Impressionism was grateful to Claude Monet. In 1861 Monet joined the First Regiment of African Light Cavalry in Algeria where he spent one year over there. He joined the studio of the Swiss-born painter Charles Gleyre at Paris, in 1862 where he had been there for almost two years. It had an excellent opportunity to draw from the nude and to meet other artists. The young Monet’s career at this point, however, was interrupted by his required military service. He spent it in Algiers, but became so ill there that he was discharged before completing his time. He stayed a short time after his return at home in Le Havre, working with Boudin and Jongkind.
