Year in Industry Programme Dr. Hana Chockler Programme Coordinator 01/10/2015

Have you started applying for jobs already? If no, why not?

What are the requirements for the programme? achieving at least 60% in your first year’s modules in the first attempt you can transfer from a 3-years degree programme to the “with a year in industry” if you have achieved 60%

Will King’s help you to find a placement? No! This is your job Career services can help Attend career fairs! The EMY webpage contains a list of companies offering placements – You can start with these, but also search independently

Can I do any job during my placement? No! The placement should be approved by me The placement should be in line with your Informatics degree – Technical skills and technically involved projects – not volunteering What happens if my placement offer is not approved? You either find another one, or you can do interruption of studies

The majority of the students do not find placements! What can you do to maximise your chances? – attend all career fairs – start applying now – apply to many places – consider placements outside of London – consider placements abroad

Important dates March 31 st – deadline for submitting your placement approval form to me – At the very least, you should be in the process of interviewing at at least one company – this means that you need to already have an official job offer by this date – this means that you need to start interviewing in October – this means that you need to start looking for places yesterday

Why do we have these deadlines? You need to be in placement for 11 months minimum New: you can do several short placements, summing to at least 11 months – to allow you to do internships in Facebook, Google, etc. as a part of your placement You cannot miss the beginning of the next academic year The hiring process takes a lot of time, especially in large companies

Timeline for the placement year: June: briefing session with Deena and myself – Then you are off to your placement November: visit/skype at your place of work – Contact me if you have any problems/issues/questions during your placement year Sep-Oct the following year: debriefing session October 31 st : deadline for submitting the report

Assessment of the year in industry Mandatory: – completing your placement (not leaving in the middle, not being fired) – attending the de-briefing session and presenting your projects – submitting a report Assessment: pass/fail

Why do placement at all? Most of the students who did the placement year received job offers Your industrial experience makes you a more attractive candidate The year in industry enriches your knowledge The year in industry shows you how to put your skills to practical use The year in industry teaches you transferrable skills, such as working in a team, interacting with a manager, interacting with peers, presenting your work You earn money

Important links start here: emy/ emy/ look at the student guidance document attend the career fair ask us about options

Summary “I think that every student has to do a year in industry – it is such a great experience” – a student who finished the placement year This is a unique opportunity – don’t miss it Start looking for a job now! Interview in several places Contact career services for advice on CV writing and presenting your skills during the interview
