Presentation transcript:

The IBM and CentAm subduction areas are linked by plate tectonics, in between lies the carbonate- rich equatorial Pacific--one of the two most important biogenic regimes in the oceans which serves as a “tectonic feeder” of material into these subduction zones. SedDB data is also directly applicable to paleoclimate studies using isotope data as proxies for ocean temperatures and salinity. SedDB- A Global Geochemical Database of Marine Sediment Geochemistry Annika K. Johansson 1, Kerstin A. Lehnert 1, Steve G. Goldstein 1, Rick W. Murray 2, Nicklas Pisias 3, Branko Djapic 1, Frank Pascuzzi 1, Sri Vinayagamoorthy 1 and Karin A. Block 1. 1 Geoinformatics for Geochemistry Program, LDEO/CIESIN 61 Route 9W Palisades, NY Boston University, 3 Oregon State University. Contact: The goal of SedDB is to provide a globally integrated data set of sedimentary geochemistry, easily and quickly accessible from any desktop. This digital data collection aims to support research and education on topics such as geochemical cycles, mass-balances and fluxes, paleoceanography and paleoclimatology. Initial focus areas are the marine sediments from the Izu-Bonin-Mariana and Central American Arcs, and the Equatorial Pacific. SedDB is supported by the National Science Foundation and managed as part of the GfG Program at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory META DATA Latitude/Longitude Elevation Lithology Age Sampling device Analytical procedure Data quality Age models (SedDb1.0) Creating a Query: SedDB1.0 (to be released this fall) has an enhanced interactive search tool which allows queries to be made for any combination of chemical data, creating customized data sets directly relevant to specific research topics. Stable isotope data for the equatorial Pacific region Begin by selecting initial search criteria: Then either….continue with all items matching the criteria….or…further refine the search by applying a variety of filters:  Lithology  Age  Data availability  Sampling device  Age model Then either….continue with all items matching the criteria….or…further refine the search by applying a variety of filters:  Lithology  Age  Data availability  Sampling device  Age model Relevance of SedDB to the MARGINS community Once selections are complete, the compiled dataset and associated metadata can be downloaded in.xls format: CentAm sites containing sedimentary geochemical data from SedDB (red) and igneous data from PetDB and GEOROC (yellow). CURRENT DATA HOLDINGS 130,000 chemical values 22,000 samples 2600 cores 110 references Plotted on GeoMapApp free downloadable software ( Subducted sediments play a major role in convergent margin magmatism, volatile cycling, and mantle evolution. Geochemical data from SedDB will provide a critical complement to data in existing igneous databases IBM sites containing sedimentary geochemical data from SedDB (red) and igneous data from PetDB and GEOROC (yellow) accessible through the EarthChem website ( Contribute Data: SedDB actively encourages direct contributions of geochemical data from investigators. Data sets can be submitted in spreadsheet form, and should include the metadata shown in the lower left box. Data entry forms to guide you can be found at: or contact: and we will assist you.
