VASCO DE GAMA By: Vallie Etienne

*~Here’s some background info..~* Vasco de Gama was born on He died on December 24, 1524, making him 54. He was a Portuguese explorer. He was the governor of Portugal with the title of Viceroy (a high ranking official) The Republic of Venice had taken control of the trade routes involving Europe and Asia. Portugal wanted to used the trade routes of Bartolomeu Dias to cut Venice off.

*~His First Voyage:~* His first Voyage was on July 8, 1497 He was accompanied by 170 men and a fleet of four ships. “São Rafael” was the name of his ship. It weight 178 tons, was 27 meters long, and 8.5 meters wide. He set sail from Lisbon and landed in the Cape of Good Hope.

*~His First Voyage (cont.) He was looking for riches to bring back to his ruler, but there were none The natives were getting suspicious, so they forced him out of their land. In conclusion, this trip was unsuccessful.

*~A Map of De Gama’s First Voyage.~*

*~His Second Voyage.~* He had made this trip to make use of the favorable winds around the ocean. On February 12, 1502, De Gama sailed with a fleet of twenty warships with the mindset of enforcing Portuguese interests in the east. After arriving in Calicut, the native gave him trouble, so he attacked them and moved on.

*~His Second Voyage~*(cont.) His next stop was Cochin, where the people were warm and friendly. After this trip, he returned to Europe with gold and silk. Later on, once he had reached the Indian Ocean, De Gama waited for a ship to return from Mecca and stole all the valuables on it. When De Gama re-arrived to Calicut on October 30, 1502 the Zamorin was willing to sign a treaty. After reviewing said treaty, he destroyed a Calicut fleet.

*~His Third, and last, Voyage.~* Vasco De Gama had earned himself the title of “fixer of problems” that started in India. De Gama was sent to the subcontinent once more time in (the purpose was that he was supposed to replace Eduardo de Menses as viceroy (representative) of the Portuguese.) Sadly, De Gama caught malaria not long after arriving in Goa and died in Cochin on Christmas Eve in 1524.

*~Fun Facts~* “São Rafael” (the boat that De Gama used on his first voyage) was burned because most of his crew members had scurvy and died. In 1539, his remains, which up to that time had lain in the Franciscan church there, were brought to Portugal and interred at Vidigueira. Contrarily to his very much unappealing personality, he had a wife and children.

*~Fun Facts~* De Gama was one of the first Europeans to take a journey by sea. Vasco De Gama was actually very harsh in his methods of leading a crew But, he had a reputation of always succeeding at what he started, one way or another.
