Question: Why should we monitor the quality of our rivers, lakes and streams? Water Quality A measure of the physical, chemical and biological factors.

If there is pollution in the Chesapeake Bay then the Blue Crabs will decrease.

Is the water quality unhealthy in the Chesapeake Bay? We went to the mason pond and we collected some water samples. We tested the water for nitrates, turbidity, phosphates, pH, and dissolved oxygen. We also tested for bacteria.

Organisms in the Pond Water We saw bacteria, algae, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and other organisms. We saw these organisms through a microscope. We put the water with bacteria on to the Petri dish with nutrients. Then we put them in the incubator. The most likely reason that the dissolved oxygen is low is probably because of algal blooms.

Chemicals in Pond Water

How Does the Pond Water Affect the Blue Crabs in the Chesapeake Bay? The pond is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The pond water drains into the Chesapeake Bay. The phosphates and nitrates in the pond water might pollute the water in the Chesapeake Bay. The pH was too high, which is lethal to Blue Crabs.

Conclusion The pond water at George Mason is unhealthy. The Chesapeake is probably unhealthy. We could test the water somewhere else to get more data. We hope you enjoyed our presentation. By David, Sammy, Jonathan, and Anthony.
