2007 NSAC Long Range Plan (4 recommendations) We recommend the completion of the 12 GeV Upgrade at Jefferson Lab. - It will enable three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon, revealing hidden aspects of its internal dynamics. -It will complete our understanding of the transition between the hadronic and quark/gluon descriptions of nuclei. -It will test definitively the existence of exotic hadrons, long- predicted by QCD as arising from quark confinement. -It will provide low-energy probes of physics beyond the Standard Model complementing anticipated measurements at the highest accessible energy scales. Recommendation 1

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Status of the CLAS112 Project Page 22 Message from JLab Director to CLAS12 Workshop I had hoped to be with you for at least part of the workshop; unfortunately it became necessary for me to attend a conflicting meeting in Washington, DC, so although I believe my name appears in the participant list, I can claim only a virtual presence. …. you can be assured that we are working hard to provide the resources both for the 12 GeV Upgrade project and for the running of the 6 GeV program. We were very pleased that recently we received 19 proposals for experiments in the 12 GeV era including some which seek to extend the scope of the currently planned equipment. ….. it is very important that we ensure the resources to provide the base capabilities, but it is also important to develop initiatives and momentum which will ensure an expanding program as we start to operate the machine in the new era. Please convey my best wishes to all, and, especially to the collaboration, my hopes for a successful workshop. Hugh Montgomery

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Status of the CLAS112 Project Page 23 Summary The 12 GeV Upgrade is the NSAC #1 Recommendation The 12 GeV Upgrade is the highest priority at Jefferson Lab The project is in construction phase: CLAS12 construction started with the first major procurements in progress: the superconducting magnets, the forward tracking detectors, and the pre-shower calorimeter. This is a very exciting time for hadronic physics, and the perfect time for new collaborators to make significant contributions to the physics and equipment of CLAS12

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Status of the CLAS112 Project Page GeV Upgrade Summary R&D is essentially complete PED (Engineering Design) finishes this year (18% remaining) Construction has started ! Significant progress: –Procurement planning and awards –MOU development –Installation planning –Space planning Last 6 months – very exciting! Next 6 months – lots of hard work ahead Continued strong User participation is critical to success
