E - Explain Explain how the “proof” you cited supports your original answer. These are called “follow-up detail sentences.”

An “A”nswer, “C”ite, and “E”xplain together… According to Ms. Kuntz, safety rules are important during science labs to prevent injuries to students and damage to equipment. First, Ms. Kuntz noted, “Long hair should always be tied back.” It is evident that by tying long hair back, students will prevent injuries. Long hair should be tied back during experiments because untied hair can be accidentally dragged through the chemicals being used. This could result in damage to the hair. Another concern of wearing long hair down is that it may catch on fire during the use of Bunsen burners. Thus, long hair should be up to prevent injuries during science labs.

A second science safety rule is, “Safety goggles must be worn at all times during experiments.” It is evident that safety goggles help to keep students safe because the goggles protect students’ eyes. Chemicals could splash or glass could break during the experiments, and the goggles will prevent things from entering the eyes.

Lastly, a final safety rule is, “Students are forbidden to have food or drink during science lab experiments.” It is evident that forbidding food and drink in the lab helps to keep students safe. Students might accidentally confuse a chemical in a beaker with their drink bottle, or something might spill on the food before the student eats it. Chemicals are very dangerous, so it would be very bad to ingest them.
