Beekeeping Basics Knowledge of bee science Knowledge of bee botany Familiarity with modern agriculture Some elementary economics Tolls & ability to work with wood Ability to keep vehicles running You can reduce stings and never need to ‘like’ being stung but stings are always a possibility – so it is important to know what to expect. Fortitude to take bee stings

Personal equipment bee veil coveralls some include veil velcro (or elastic) straps gloves boots + Personal protective equipment can be very expensive BUT should be adequate to insure that the beekeeper can feel comfortable in colony inspections. If he/she is worrying about being stung it will be difficult to concentrate on management/inspection tasks. It is important to feel comfortable & concentrate on inspection not to fear next sting!

Personal equipment bee veil coveralls (including veil) velcro (or elastic) straps gloves boots smoker hive tool (or frame lifter) + Ancillary equipment of smoker & hive tool are just as important. Smoker is behavior modification tool (change guarding behavior) and hive tool is important to avoid jarring and eases removal of equipment both of which helps reduce chances of stingings. Costs vary Courage!!

The Hive - Hive stand - bottom board w/ entrance - brood boxes - supers - covers Review of the basic Langstroth hive from Chapter 6. Beekeeper would not use both super types on one colony and brood area would need more than one standard box to allow for brood expansion and best results. Good time to review basics of nest ecology.
