Electronic Systems Support Background

3 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity “Joint Activity” 4 LHC experiments & ESS cooperating on radiation & magnetic field tolerance “pre-approval” for candidate equipment Wiener PL500 Work by ATLAS (Hruska) + ESS (Allongue) + Wiener Applications in ATLAS TRT, ATLAS Muons, ALICE TRD CAEN SASY Work done by ALICE (?) + ESS (Allongue) + CAEN Applications in ALICE

4 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity ATLAS Detector Power Supplies Steering Group Internal ATLAS coordination Tender for LV power supplies & components Market Survey done, tender in preparation TRT, Muons (MDT only?), Pixels Limited success in promoting common approach Technical responsibility Funding ATLAS Tender pending MS Results Companies contacted - 84 Replies - 25 (to date) Not interested - 5 In consideration - 18

5 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity JA Test Description (Nov.2001) Radiation (ATLAS requirements) SEE - 1*10 11 protons/cm 2 TID ~15 krads NIEL ~1.6*10 11 neutrons/cm 1MeV Magnetic field ALICE <5,000 Gauss ATLAS Muon barrel <500G Muon end cap <1000G TRT ? CMS ? LHCb <200G

Electronic Systems Support Requirements (From meeting 26 Oct. 2002)

7 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity ALICE (G.Stefanini) Continuation of SASY prototype evaluation in “Joint Effort” scheme lab magnetic field (dipole in bldg 168) radiation ? Continuation of development of “rad tolerant” PL500 Proposed activity (if supported with interest and resources) Participation in the study and test of LV power distribution system: low inductance power cabling bus bars conductor cooling etc

8 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity ATLAS (Philippe Farthouat) PIXELs Wuppertal responsibility SCT Prague responsibility TRT Cracow-CERN responsibility In the cavern for bulk and voltage regulators inside detector Something like PL500 from Wiener is OK Willing to tender to go ahead with rad-hard and B tolerant prototype development LARG BNL responsibility Tiles Prague responsibility for the design Muons RPC Roma 2 responsibility Asked CAEN to deliver Full custom with low and high (10 kV) voltage 7-8 kGauss + radiation Muons TGC Israel responsibility Not defined yet Muons MDT Shared responsibility Bulk with regulators on the detector Bulk in the cavern Devices a la PL500 should be OK

9 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity LHCb (Jørgen Christiansen) Major request from LHCb is to find modular power supply system “a la Wiener PL500” which can be qualified to work in cavern: Total dose below 10krad over 10 years. Neutrons below 2.6x Mev neutrons/cm 2 over 10 years Hadrons with an energy above 20Mev below 6.4x10 11 hadrons/cm 2 Magnetic field below 200 Gauss (further shielding may be possible)

10 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity LHC Crate Power Supplies ESS internal prototype development for EP common project Water cooled remote PS Low power crates – restricted cooling Radiation and magnetic tolerance Requests from CMS, LHCb Based on Joint Activity detector PS work

Electronic Systems Support Status From the ESS Perspective

12 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity CAEN “SASY” DC-DC Minimal involvement by ESS in magnetic field tests

13 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity Wiener PL500 - tests Radiation tests (ATLAS/ESS) SEE tests in Louvain and PSI Power modules successful up to p/cm 2 Rectifier module tests failed in Louvain due to a bad opto-coupler. Tests at PSI OK after change of opto-coupler Tests in TCC2 at CERN Unit failed due to problems in the MCU board ~0.6krad Modified MCU still faulty at PSI tests with modified board

14 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity Wiener PL500 - tests Magnetic Field Tests Wiener have performed some tests on shielding efficiency for sensitive components Supposed to work up to 1000 Gauss Waiting for a prototype for testing

15 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity Wiener PL500 - proposed mods ESS – B.Allongue 1.The microprocessor control to be removed from the output voltage control loop At the moment, the input data for DAC and PWM controller comes from the microprocessor All protection, OVP, OCP should be achieved by means of a voltage reference and not by the microprocessor Threshold could be set by a resistive divider according to the user specification

16 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity Wiener PL500 - proposed mods 2.Control - MCU should Set on/off Trim output voltage in specified range Within a defined range Use the DAC, but with a hardware lock Monitor 3.Interlock Crate should have interlock IN/OUT connected straight to the DCDC PWM by-passing the MCU MCU to read the status only

17 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity Wiener PL500 – proposed mods 4.MCU power recycling in case of SEE RESET is not sufficient. In this case it is possible to “have access” to the supply in any case of MCU problems and keep the electronics running by HWLOCK Output voltage constrained to remain within safe limits OVP & OCP is still functional independently of MCU In case of "soft" SEE, the MCU would not be destroyed The connection would be lost only for few seconds because of power cycling

Electronic Systems Support ESS Project

19 26 Feb '03 - cp Power Supply Joint Activity ESS Project so far… Wiener Radiation magnetic field tolerant crates Detectors Pursue ATLAS requirements TRT/Muon MDT ALICE? CAEN SASY CMS have asked for independent check of CAEN results…
