Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2qdlYkl2HY

MS Unit 3: Ocean Zones and Ocean Chemistry Pretest Copy the following questions on a piece of notebook paper and try to answer. Remember this is a pretest and used to guagae your current understanding. It will go into eSembler with a 0% weight and will also be used to show how your understanding improved after the Unit 3 post test.

MS Unit 3 Ocean Zones and Chemistry Pre-test 1. List the 4 ways that the ocean is divided into zones. 2.  List the 3 photic and 5 pelagic zones. 3.  Differentiate between the continental shelf and continental slope. 4.  Explain the limitations of living in each of the following zones;  benthic, pelagic, neritic 5.  Describe how temperature, density, and salinity are related?

MS Unit 3 Ocean Zones and Chemistry Pre-test continued 6.  Explain the unique properties of water. 7.  Differentiate between cohesion and adhesion. 8.  Describe the pH scale. 9.  What is ocean acidification and explain what is causing it? 10.  List some adaptations that organisms that live in the intertidal zone and also in the hadalpelagic zone would have.

Homework / Opening Assignment Day 2 Google 3 ways that the ocean is divided into zones.

Marine Science: Unit 3 – Ocean Zones and Ocean Chemistry

Part 1 – Ocean Zones Student learning goals for part 1 include; Students will be able to .. . Describe the types of ocean zones, the physical characteristics of each zone and determine the type of organisms that live there. Describe the limitations and adaptations needed for organisms to live in each ocean zone Explain how changes to an ecosystem like climate change, seasonal variation, and succession can affect populations in an ocean zone.

Zones are differentiated based on different properties These properties are as follows: Water or Bottom Near Shore or Offshore Light Availability Ocean Depth

● The zones exist only in our minds and on paper as a way to study different characteristics of different areas of the oceans ● Just as the different oceans are not separated by any boundaries, neither are the zones in the ocean ● Animals pass through the zones readily without any actual borders to stop them ● These zones can differ depending on what information you view so you are only responsible for what you learn in this class

A. Pelagic (water) or Benthic (bottom)

Pelagic Benthic The sea floor at all depths The water column above the bottom Organisms that live in this zone swim or drift It can be from the ocean’s surface to the deepest waters The sea floor at all depths Organisms that live here generally don’t swim well or are sessile It can be on the ocean floor from where the waves break to the trenches

Benthic or Pelagic?

B. Neritic (nearshore) or Oceanic (offshore)

Neritic Oceanic From where the tide comes up out to the edge of the continental shelf From the continental shelf all the way across the ocean to the other continental shelf

Neritic or Oceanic?

C. Light Availability Photic Zone – Surface of ocean down to about 100 meters Greek, photic means “lit” Disphotic Zone – Below photic zone from about 100 meters down to about 500 meters Greek, disphotic means “poorly lit” Aphotic Zone – Below disphotic zone from about 500 meters down to the bottom Greek, aphotic means “without light” 90% of the ocean is in the aphotic zone!!

Photic, Disphotic or Aphotic?

D. Ocean Depth Epipelagic - “Surface” Mesopelagic – “Middle” Bathypelagic – “Deep” Abyssalpelagic – “Bottomless” Hadalpelagic – “Unseen”

Epipelagic Zone 90% of all ocean life lives here. This is the only zone where photosynthesis occurs. This zone contains the most important organisms in the ocean!!!! Guess what they are. Why do you think they are the most important organisms?

Mesopelagic Zone Food is scarce, and mostly falls from above. There is enough light from above that animals need camouflage, but not enough for photosynthesis.

Bathypelagic Zone Deep Dark Cold Food is very scarce Water pressure is immense, reaching 5,850 pounds per square inch. In spite of the pressure, a surprisingly large number of creatures can be found here Most of the animals that live at these depths are black or red in color due to the lack of light.

Abyssalpelagic Zone Three-quarters of the ocean floor lies within this zone. Deeper Darker Colder Even less food The water temperature is near freezing. The deepest fish ever discovered was found in the Puerto Rico Trench at a depth of 27,460 feet (8,372 meters).

Hadalpelagic Zone Deepest Darkest Coldest The trenches The deepest point in the ocean is located in the Mariana Trench off the coast of Japan at 35,797 feet (10,911 meters). Temperature of the water is just above freezing, and the pressure is an incredible eight tons per square inch. That is approximately the weight of 48 Boeing 747 jets. In spite of the pressure and temperature, life can still be found here. Invertebrates such as starfish and tube worms can thrive at these depths

Opening Assignment Day 3 List the following zones in the correct order AND tell me what the prefix means Hadalpelagic Epipelagic Abyssalpelagic Bathypelagic Mesopelagic

Day 3 & 4 Assignment Today you will be reading and coloring your way through the ocean zones. Please follow the directions and answer the questions. This assignment is due on Monday 10/20

Opening Assignment Day 5 Copy and answer the following questions. 1. List the 3 ocean zones that are based on light availability 2. Neritic means ________________ 3. Benthic means _______________ 4. Pelagic means _______________

Ocean Zones 4th period – Please finish your reading and coloring packet then turn it in. We have 2 more things to do today to get ready for the vocabulary quiz on ocean zones for this Wednesday.

Light zones sentence strips Each table has a stack of 18 sentence strips. Organize the strips based on which zone they are referring to: Photic Disphotic Aphotic

Vocabulary Quiz on Wednesday 10/22 Words that will be tested on the quiz – make notecards of these words now  Pelagic Benthic Neritic Oceanic Photic Disphotic Aphotic Epipelagic Mesopelagic Bathypelagic Abyssalpelagic Hadalpelagic Continental shelf Continental slope

Vocabulary Quiz on Wednesday 10/22 Words that will be tested on the quiz – make notecards of these words now  Pelagic – in the water Benthic - bottom Neritic – nearshore Oceanic – offshore Photic – well lit Disphotic – poorly lit Aphotic – without light Epipelagic – surface water Mesopelagic – middle water Bathypelagic – deep water Abyssalpelagic – bottomless water Hadalpelagic - unseen Continental shelf – from shore to where dropoff occurs Continental slope – the angle from the drop off to the deep water

Opening Assignment Copy the chart below and label it with the appropriate vocabulary word.
