Katie Birch Portfolio Director – Delivery Services OCLC What Does Electronic ILL Mean to You? PVLR 23 January 2012

The end user experience in 2012 Getting the user what they want in a timely way- Minutes and hours rather than days and weeks?

What does electronic ILL mean to you? Delivery resources electronically Sharing electronic resources Just in time purchasing Short-term access to e-resources

Article Exchange A cloud-based document delivery tool for: 1.lending libraries to deliver articles to borrowing libraries 2.borrowing libraries to deliver articles to their end users.

Article Exchange: What is it? Once the file has been picked up for the first time, it will remain available on this site for 5 days. After 5 days, the file will be removed. A file can be picked up a maximum of 5 times for each URL/password combination. Files that are never picked up will be removed after 30 days.

Sharing electronic resources

1-2-3 Enhanced sharing of articles

License management tool In WorldCat knowledge base, indicate which collections and titles are licensed for ILL: Yes No Unknown Silent Provide any instructions/restrictions for lending your licensed content Print and Send Print and Scan In Country Profit/Not for Profit

The Shortest Distance Between Two Clicks: From User to Article in No Time Flat If a picture is worth a thousand words… Take a look at this WorldCat lending request.

Workflow for an article held electronically by a lending library Home library notifies the end user is it available and the end user has xx number of days to download the article Lending library follow link, prints out and scans the article, uploads the article to Article Exchange and notifies the home library that is available for them The lending library cannot give the borrowing library access to their licensed journals but they can provide the article WorldShare ILL integrates with the Knowledge Base to provide the lending library with a URL to the article requested by the borrowing library Home library uses WorldShare ILL to locate the article from a lending library End user wants a journal article not held by their “home” library

Just in time purchasing + Short term access to e-resources

Market Place Feb ’12 Staff option to buy item instead of ILL May ‘12 Modify ILL workflows to support buy-it Aug ’12 Ability to define buy-it profile in Service Config Nov ’12 Implement buy-it profile Feb/May ‘13 Buy-it from WMS ACQ module Increasingly libraries are making just in time, buy it decisions rather than placing an ILL with a lending library

Workflow for an ebook from a Marketplace partner End user has xx days to access and view the item Borrowing library notifies the end user it is available Marketplace partner has an ebook and provides a link to the borrowing library within minutes of the borrowing library placing the request Home library uses WorldShare ILL to locate the book from other libraries or from a Marketplace partner End user wants a book not held by their “home” library
