Legislation 2001 General Assembly HB 1903 Health; radon programs SB 838 Health; radon proficiency listings

Legislation 2003 General Assembly HB 1524 Reporting radioactive materials HB 2321 Health; radon testing.

Radiation Protection Regulations Proposed changes will include: NRC's revisions to the Radiation Protection Standards in 1992 and again in 2000 Adopt the latest version of the State Suggested Regulations Implement sections of the State Code that have not been implemented, specifically bonding and surety requirements. Published Notice of Intent November 2002 Notice withdrawn January 2003.

Periodic Regulatory Review Radiation Protection Fee Regulations Public Comment published September 2003 Public comments suggest need to increase registration and inspection fees, and establish fees for certain new X-ray machines. Staff agrees with public comments and recommends establishing fees for bone densitometers and certain combination dental X-ray machines.

Emergency Planning Training Equipment Support Full Scale Ingestion Exercise July , 2003 at Surry Nuclear Power Station with federal participation. Staff working closely with Shipyards on emergency planning.

Potassium Iodine Thyroid Blocker FDA issues advisory on the use of KI based on Chernobyl data. NRC issues new rule on December 21, 2000 regarding stockpiling KI for public and offers KI to states. Virginia accepts KI from NRC for distribution to public. VDH adopts FDA guidance for most sensitive member of general public and applies to emergency workers and entire general public. National Academy of Science announces report on the use of KI (December 2003).

Emergency/Incident Response US DOT exemptions for scrap metal (7) and municipal waste shipments(1) and responds to returned shipments.

Orphan Source US Dept. of Energy provides funding for disposal of orphan radioactive sources. Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) administers funds. States enter into an agreement with CRCPD for selecting a Radioactive materials broker and approval from CRCPD for payment of disposal. VDH identified a scrap metal dealer in Virginia who has received a returned shipment containing an orphan source.

Tools For Schools

Contains 23 years of environmental radiation monitoring data from all fifty states and U.S. territories and 40 years of measurements of strontium in milk. VDH has ~25 years data for two nuclear power stations and BWXT. VDH participates in a pilot program to archive data. ERAMS Searchable Database
