Global warming causes sea levels to get higher destroying the sandy beaches that Hawaiian monk seals rest on. Disease is spreading. Young seals can mistake plastic bags and other wastes for food. Young seals can get entangled in fishing nets. Latley people have been overfishing, fish are a huge part of the monk seals diet this has caused starvation.

1/5 pups will make it through the first year. The population is declining at a rate of 4% per year There are a little more than 1000 Hawaiian monk seals remaining. The population is declining at a rate of 4% per year There are a little more than 1000 Hawaiian monk seals remaining.

 On ford island a Hawaiian monk seal hospital has been opened to care for injured seals and conduct research on the seals.  Harassment off Hawaiian monk seal is punishable by as low as 25,000 dollar in fines to 5 years in prison.  People are trying to decrease their pollution.  An annual Hawaiian monk seal count is held every year in Hawaii  The Hawaiian monk seal is Hawaii's state mammal.

 The hawaiin monk seal count helps show increases and decreases in the population of the hawaiin monk seals  Now that the hawaiin monk seal is the state animal, more funds are given for its protection.

 Without the Hawaiian monk seals squid and crab, a main food source for them might overpopulate.  Tiger sharks, the predators of the Hawaiian monk seals might overpopulate.  If squid overpopulate then fish may be threatened because squid eat fish, also over fishing may have an effect on this.

 We need the hawaiin monk seal to protect the fish population and control the population of squid, after millions of years we cannot let it go, not when we need it the most.
