 What do you KNOW about the Puritans?

 The Puritans  Criticized the corruption of the Church of England.  Believed every individual had direct access to the word of God.  Some Puritans were Separatists (those who wanted to completely separate from the Church of England). The Mayflower Pilgrims who came in 1620 were Separatists.  In 1630, group of Puritans led by John Winthrop landed in New England and formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

  Two speeches by Puritan leaders.  See if you can figure out how the Puritans believed they should act in the New World.  Think about the essential question:  Were the Puritans selfish or selfless? Document Reading
