PLAN OF THE COURSE Teaching Unit : MY BODY This lesson is designed to teach parts of the body to the students from 9-10 years of age. They are at the beginner level. They can tell their body parts in their own language but they don’t have enough knowledge about English ones. They only know the most basic parts of the body.

Objectives At the end of the course, the students will be able to : name the body parts locate the body parts in a picture of body understand and use vocabulary related to the parts of the body. tell the functions of each body part. The criteria is that the students will write some sentences indicating the functions of the body parts. Ex: I can see with my eyes.

As is aforementioned, this lesson has been made for 4th or 5th grade students. They are learners of English as a Second Language on a basic level so the course will be made as easy as possible for them to understand and learn quickly. They will learn new vocabulary, new spelling of this new words. The lesson will take place in a language classroom equipped with the latest technology. These technological devices will be used during the lesson. Also, in order to reach the students from different intelligences and learning styles, different teaching strategies will be used. To understand better and store the information easily, the students will be asked to do warming up activities, hands-on activities and group activities. Moreover, by the help of these kinds of activities, the learning environment will be made enjoyable for the students. For assessing their learning, the students will be given some worksheets at the end of the lesson and asked to do them.

First of all, the lesson will start with a warm-up activity, a well known song. The students will watch a video including the song ‘ If you’re happy ’ because this song includes the main parts of the body. At first, they only will be asked to watch and then do the same things what they see in the video. After watching this video, the teacher will make an introduction to the topic. S/he will show a picture indicating the body parts to the students. Then, s/he will teach the parts of the body by pointing at the picture. Then, the students are asked to do some kinds of activities. Firstly, they are asked to do a hands-on activity. They will complete a torso on the paper. Second activity is a group activity. They are asked to do a presentation about the functions of the body parts. The last activity is to make a dictionary in Power point and write some sentences.

Finally, in the last part of the lesson, the teacher will give some worksheets to the students in order to test them and ask them to do some exercises. Also, s/he will give some puzzles to the students. The exercises and puzzles are below:

INTRODUCTION « Now we will learn about the parts of our body. »

TASK The class will be divided into the groups. Each group will be given a paper which there is a torso. They are asked to complete only one part of the torso. For example, the first group will complete only the parts on the head. Then, the groups are asked to introduce the body parts which they have completed on the paper to the class. Firstly, they will search and then briefly talk about the functions of these parts. When the presentations are over, students will make their own body parts dictionary in Power point and add example sentences to it.

PROCESS The class will be split up into three groups. A paper on which there is a torso is handed out to each group. They are asked to complete the torso. First group is asked to complete the parts on the head, second group is asked to complete the parts on the body and the last group is asked to complete the parts on the legs. Then, they are asked to search about the parts which they have completed. After searching, they are asked to present the information which they have found to the class. After each group’s presentation, each student is asked to create their own dictionary from this topic by using Power Point. They are also asked to give simple explanations and write sentences indicating the functions of the body parts.

EVALUATION Beginning -1- Developing -2- Qualified -3- Examplary -4- Score Completing the torso They couldn’t complete the torso. They tried to complete but there were some mistakes. The mistakes were very few. They did great and completed the torso right. Presentation Their presentation was too simple.No right information. The information was right but it was little. Most information was given and they were correct. All the information was right. Everything was properly done. Maximum effort Making dictionary They couldn’t use the information they have just learned.Their dictionaries were too simple and included some wrong information.Also,they couldn’t write example sentences. They could use the information in a correct way.Their dictionaries were good but not enough.They could write example sentences but they weren’t enough and grammatical. Their dictionaries were very colourful. Most of the information was used in the dictionaries.The examples were good. All the information learned in the class was used in the dictionaries. The dictionaries were well-prepared. The sentences were grammatical. Excellent work!

CONCLUSION Now the students are familiar with the parts of the body in English. They can name and locate the body parts. They have learned new vocabularies and pronunciations of these new vocabularies. Also, they can form a sentence saying the functions of the body parts.
