The Learning Curve: Teaching and Technology Ashley Dobbs EME 2040

Learning Process Behaviorism Information Processing Constructivism

Behaviorism The action of doing not thinking The acquisition of a new behavior through learning Achieved through a conditioning process

Behaviorism: Conditioning Classic Conditioning-when we naturally respond to stimulus EX: Pavlov’s Dog Experiment Behavioral Conditioning-works on a feedback system. If we receive a reward, we are more likely to respond.

Behaviorism Chart

Information Processing We each process information at a different rate Focus on Memory Functions -Both short term and long term

Short Term Memory The “active” or “primary” part of the brain that can store information for up to seconds Typically works with a small amount of information (Ex: phone numbers)

Long Term Memory The part of the brain that allows information to be stored at longer lengths The retention of information depends on the individual student

Constructivism By reflecting on our own experiences, we construct our own views of the world How does this impact learning? -Curriculum -Instruction -Assessment

Positive Learning Process Impact of Learning Behaviorism: Positive & Negative feedback is Effective in learning New patterns Information Processing: Repetition will Help with memory Functions Constructivism: Education allows For people to draw Their own conclusions

Student Summary *In terms of the overall look of this presentation, I wanted to use a “school motif” of a pencil and paper since the subject matter was dealing with learning issues. I also combined this with some neutral toned slides so that it would keep the audience focused. *I focused primarily on the 3 Learning Processes (Behaviorism, Information Processing, and Constructivism), because these are the most prominent issues

Student Summary (con’t) *I also used two charts, one that is a fun example for Behaviorism and another demonstrating the learning processes of each topic *I also used clip art that matched the topic and the slide to give variety throughout the presentation *The hyperlinked items are the websites I used to gather information
