New Technology in WWI

Today you will be able to… Decide as part of a group which part of WW1 you will study. Identify new weapons used in World War1. Select four weapons and explain their use. Explain which of the weapons you have studied was most effective.

What are you going to do? You are going to make up a power point with other members of your group. You will be given two choices: The Home Front During WW1 New Technology during WW1 In your power point you can use information from a range of sources: books, Websites, TV programmes, DVDs etc. In order to pass this part of your course you and your group must present your power point or a part of it to the rest of the class.

Slide 2: Introduction What was the ‘Western Front’ Include a general description of a trench, focus on how it protected soldiers What was meant by a stalemate in trench warfare? Explain what you will include in your Power Point about how both sides tried to break the stalemate.

Slide 3 Attacking a Trench What was the usual method of attacking a trench? How successful was this method? Give an example of a trench battle that involved Scottish soldiers? – use a primary source to give examples of what happened.

Slide 4 –New Weapons Make a list of as many new or improved weapons used in WW1 Try to say when they were introduced? Why were they introduced – what did both sides hope for?

Slide 5 – You Choose On the next slides you will pick four of these weapons. Describe them in action, you could quote from a source, use a website, watch a DVD etc. Supply a photograph to show the weapon in use – this will be a primary source. Say what their strengths (good points)are Say what their weaknesses(bad points) are.

Slide 6 – Weapon 1 Name? Description Photograph Strengths (good points) Weaknesses (bad points).

Slide 7 – Weapon 1 Name? Description Photograph Strengths (good points) Weaknesses (bad points).

Slide 8 – Weapon 1 Name? Description Photograph Strengths (good points) Weaknesses (bad points).

Slide 9 – Weapon 1 Name? Description Photograph Strengths (good points) Weaknesses (bad points).

Slide 10 – Your Conclusion Now you must sum up your information Which of your weapons was the most effective against the enemy? You must say why this weapon worked so well. Compare your weapon to any other used to attack a trench and say why it was an improvement, can you give any evidence to back this up e.g. the name of a battle or quote from a source?

Success Criteria I was able to work as part of a group to decide which part of WW1 we would study. I identified a number of new weapons used in World War1. I selected four weapons and explained their strengths & weaknesses. I could compare different new weapons used in WW1 I explained which of the weapons that my group studied was most effective and gave a reason why.
