Weaving & Commentary With Antigone

Weaving is an advanced form of TLQ (Transition, Lead in, Quote) To weave effectively, the writer incorporates some commentary and pieces of a quote into a CD.

CM’s before weaving… Topic Sentence: Antigone’s decision to bury Polyneices is defensible because all individuals deserve a proper burial. TLQ: For example, Antigone tells Creon “Nevertheless, there are honors due to all the dead” (799). What can be improved?

CM’s after weaving… For example, when confronted by Creon for her crime, Antigone says, “Nevertheless, there are honors due to all the dead” (799), reminding the king that even a “traitor” deserves the right to be properly buried, and that Creon’s edict will not stop her. Why is this a strong example?

The Big Picture In your first commentary after a quote, write about the quote’s significance to the given scene. In your second commentary after a quote, expand your first commentary by connecting it to another scene in the novel or analyzing its relationship to the work as a whole.

Example of quote with commentary For example, when confronted by Creon for her crime, Antigone says, “Nevertheless, there are honors due to all the dead” (799), reminding the king that even a “traitor” deserves the right to be properly buried, and that Creon’s edict will not stop her. CM #1: Antigone knows that her decision to bury her brother is the morally right and honorable action to take. CM #2: Without that proper burial, Polyneices would not be able to join the gods in death, and Antigone will not allow her brother such a dishonor.
