Tube Amps  First introduced in the 1930’s, tube amps use vacuum tubes to increase the power of a signal  Requires tubes to be replaced periodically  High-end amps are generally tube amps

Solid State Amps  First introduced in 1947, solid state amps don’t use tubes, based on semiconductor circuits  Weigh less and are less expensive than tube amps, but generally not as good

Modeling Amps  Modeling amps, introduced in the 1990’s, were designed to emulate well-known tube amps, sometimes incorporate tubes  They also have built in effects
