Fighting World War I SWBAT: explain how waging war before WWI differs from waging war in the 1910s. Homework: None Do Now: If you had to take a guess, which weapon do you think is more deadly? Why?

Clip Time ▪ What is the setting of the battle? ▪ What kind of weapons are being used? ▪ What kind of tactics look like they’re being employed here? ▪

Technology Before WWI ▪ Before WWI, movements towards deadlier and deadlier weapons was already in motion. ▪ Guns could now hold several bullets without having to reload after each shot. ▪ Cannons became more accurate and could shoot longer distances. ▪ The first machine gun (Gatling Gun) made its limited debut during the Civil War. ▪ Hand grenades were primitive. ▪ Ships powered by steam began arming themselves with iron.

What changed? ▪ industrialization affected every aspect of how humans went about killing one another. ▪ For the first time, mass production methods were applied to weapons and to the technology of warfare in general. ▪ Advances in metallurgy and in chemical industries had created new firepower that made defense almost invincible and attack almost impossible. ▪ This is why trench warfare exists during WWI.

Tomorrow’s Activity ▪ In groups, you will be assigned one weapon of WWI. You will fill out the chart for that weapon. ▪ You must also create a poster to present to the class that provides a brief overview of that weapon (how it worked, why it was so deadly, etc.). This must include some sort of picture as well. ▪ As each group presents on that weapon, you will be responsible for filling in the rest of your chart. ▪ Tomorrow when you come in, you should get right to work with your group. ▪ This organizer in addition to your leaders of WWI organizer will be used for a quiz on Friday.

Group Number: Weapon ▪ 1Tank ▪ 2Machine Gun ▪ 3Poisonous Gas ▪ 4Plane ▪ 5Submarine ▪ 6Rifle
