Adjectives and Adverbs

Adjectives describe __________ and __________.  nouns  pronouns

Adjectives answer four questions.  Which one?  How much?  How many?  What kind?

Question Which questions do adjectives answer? Which one? How much? How many? What kind?

Find the Adjective(s) in the following sentence.  Some Some elephants like peanuts.  Answers – “How much?”

Find the Adjective(s) in the following sentence.  white White stripes are found on skunks.  Answers – “What kind?”

Find the Adjective(s) in the following sentence.  That That seal is eating.  Answers – “Which one?”

Find the Adjective(s) in the following sentence.  Two Two camels ate hay.  Answers – “How many?”

A Proper Adjective is formed from a…  Proper Noun  country (noun)  America (Proper Noun)  American (Proper Adjective)

A and An Refer to any person, place, or thing in general. A fence can be made of wood or metal. A refers to a fence in general

Adverbs-describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Examples He ran quickly. She left yesterday. We went there. It was too hot! Answers How? When? Where? To what extent or how much.

Hint Many, NOT ALL, adverbs end in ly.

Adverbs modify (change) verbs Ex. Horses galloped swiftly across the plains. Swiftly tells how they galloped. Horses usually stay away from the trainer until a bond is developed. Usually tells when they stay away from the trainer; away tells where they stay.

Adverbs modify (change) Adjectives This young colt is really frightened. Really tells to what extent the colt is frightened. The trainer has been tremendously patient with the colt. Tremendously tells to what extent the trainer has been patient.

Question Identify the adverb and adjective in the sentence. Megan truly does not want to go to the clandestine dance. Truly Truly tells to what extent Megan does not want to go to the dance.

Position of adverbs An adverb can be placed before or after a verb it modifies. Sometimes an adverb can be separated from a verb by another word or words.

Examples The coin collector carefully examined the rare silver coin. He polished the coin carefully to reveal the embossed date.

Question Identify the adverb and verb in this sentence. Eager to find out when it was minted, he looked carefully through the magnifying glass.

Relative Adverbs A relative adverb is used to introduce an adjective clause. Relative adverbs include where, when, and why. Here is the place where we agreed to meet. Where related the adjective clause to the noun place.

Question Identify the relative adverb in this sentence. Late afternoon is the time when the cardinals gather at the birdfeeder. when

Conjunctive Adverbs Used to express relationships between independent clauses. Ex. Accordingly, also, besides, consequently, finally, furthermore, hence, however, instead, nevertheless, otherwise, similarly, still, therefore, thus.

Example The hot, dry, summer stifled the growth of wheat and alfalfa; consequently, many farmers were concerned about the upcoming harvest.
