How to make a quote sandwich

A quote sandwich has 5 main parts Claim Context Quote Analysis Conclusion

An example of a quote sandwich Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred. When he saw babies being murdered before his eyes, he could no longer trust God: “Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust” (Wiesel 32). His faith faded with each day and new horrific experience. What he had believed in with all his being before was beginning to seem false.

1. Claim Your argument. What you’re trying to explain/prove/show. Example: Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred.

2. Context Where in the story the quote is from Which character said or thought it What is happening at that moment Example: Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred.

3. Quote Should not be too long Should not merely state a fact Must be punctuated correctly Must be followed by the correct citation Example: Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred.

3.5 Punctuating the quote Mrs. Rennie said, “the quote will start with a lower case letter if you lead into it” (Rennie 4). The author and page # will be in parenthesis after the quote. The period goes after the parenthesis.

4. Analysis Your interpretation Explain how it proves your point Describe what the quote reveals Example: Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred.

5. Conclusion Wraps up paragraph Refers back to your claim to solidify your point Example Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred.

Quote Sandwich…mmm…delicious! Throughout his experience in the concentration camps, Wiesel was unable to believe in both God’s mercy and the Nazi’s unreasonable hatred. Claim Context Quote Analysis Conclusion

Notes The main purpose of quoting is to support your analysis. All arguments require evidence! This example was a very simple version of a quote sandwich. The context, quote, and analysis can, and often will be, more than one sentence each.
