Close Reading and the CCSS Close Reading Defined Close reading is the methodical investigation of a complex text through answering text dependent questions geared to unpack the text’s meaning. Close reading directs students to examine and analyze the text through a series of activities that focus students on the meanings of individual words and sentences as well as the overall development of events and ideas. It calls on students to extract evidence from the text as well as draw non-trivial inferences that logically follow from what they have read. Predict content ? Ask a question?

Close Reading and the CCSS Close Reading Defined Close reading is the methodical investigation of a complex text through answering text dependent questions geared to unpack the text’s meaning. Close reading directs students to examine and analyze the text through a series of activities that focus students on the meanings of individual words and sentences as well as the overall development of events and ideas. It calls on students to extract evidence from the text as well as draw non-trivial inferences that logically follow from what they have read. Summarize: The author implies that students fail to read closely and critically. They need strategies to help them focus on what matters! Question: Is the author deliberately contrasting close reading with skimming as is suggested by the word methodical? What does the author mean by non- trivial inferences?

Close Read the second paragraph of the same text. Highlight vocabulary and key words in yellow. Highlight the main idea or topic sentence in orange. Highlight supporting details in blue. Write a summary sentence or phrase in the left margin. Write a question suggested by the text in the right margin. Look for patterns and repetition! Look for verbs!

This sort of careful attention to how the text unfolds allows students to assemble - through discussion and writing – an overarching picture of the texts as a whole as well as grasp the fine details on which that understanding rests. It prepares students for the kind of reading tasks they will encounter after graduation. It motivates students by rewarding them for reading inquisitively and discovering the meaning and insight within the text that makes it worthy of attention. The ultimate goal of close reading is for students to be able to use close reading strategies independently in order to read and comprehend complex text proficiently. Look for verbs or for patterns and repetition!

Remember: Close reading is focused on a purpose. At this point you are setting the purpose and the activity. As the year progresses, the goal is to have students who are skilled enough to set their own purposes. The second handout suggests questions your students might ask while reading and also presents the AVID approach to close reading. Please bring that handout with you to the next PLC.

Secure a binder that YOU can bring to each PLC. Find an article that you would use in your class that supports your essential question (long term goal – essential question for upcoming PLC) and perform the Close Reading strategy on the article and bring completed to next PLC on August 29 th.
