By Mr. Gerzon B. Mascariñas Measuring Time Measuring Temperature GBM 2012

Objectives: 1 Measure time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years 2 Measure temperature in degree Celsius and Fahrenheit 3 Solve word problems measuremen t of time and temperature GBM 2012

Trivia: Ancient people used in telling time 1 Position of the sun 2 Behavior of the animals during their time 3 Sundials, water clocks, and hourglasses GBM 2012

What is time? Time is measured by the rotation of the earth on its axis, and its complete revolution around the sun. 1 GBM 2012

Choose the most reasonable unit for measuring each time interval. 1.A blink of the eye 2.Time spent in sleeping 3.A 100-meter dash 4.Basketball practice 5.A television commercial In every day life, time intervals are usually measured in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. GBM 2012

Measures of Time : Conversion 1 day = 24 hours (hr) 1 hour=60 minutes (min.) 1 minute=60 seconds (s.) 1 week=7 days 1 month=28 to 31 days =4 weeks 1 year=12 months =52 weeks =365 days 1 leap year=366 days GBM 2012 Second is the base unit measure of time.

Measures of Time : Conversion 1 decade=10 years 1 score=20 years 1 century=100 years 1 millennium=1,000 years GBM 2012

Convert each measurement to the indicated unit. 1.4 days = ___ hours Solution: 4 days x 24 hours=96 hours 1 day GBM 2012

Convert each measurement to the indicated unit hours = ___ minutes Solution: 34 hoursx 60 mins. =2,040 minutes 1 hour GBM 2012

Convert each measurement to the indicated unit hours = ___ days Solution: 60 hours x 1 day = 24 hours 60 = 2.5 days or 2 ½ days 24 hrs GBM 2012

Convert each measurement to the indicated unit hours 12 minutes = ___ seconds Solution: a.13 hours x 60 min = 13 x 60 = 780 min 1 hour b = 792 min c. 792 min x 60 sec = 792 x 60 = 47, 520 sec 1 min GBM 2012

2 Operations on Time Addition, Subtraction GBM 2012

Add : 4 hrs. 48 min and 2 hrs. 39 min Solution: 4 hrs 48 min + 2 hrs 39 min 6 hrs 87 min Since 1 hour = 60 min Rename 87 min as 1 hr 27 min 6 hrs + 1 hr 27 min = 7 hrs 27 min Addition of time GBM 2012

Add : 18 min 6 sec and 7 min 58 sec Solution: 18 min 6 sec + 7 min 58 sec 25 min 64 sec = Since 1 min = 60 sec Rename 64 sec as 1 min 4 sec 25 mins 64 sec = 26 min 4 sec GBM 2012

Subtract : 12 hr 8 min and 7 hr 21 min Solution: 12 hr 8 min - 7 hr 21 min Regrouping is applied when subtrahend is greater than the minuend. 12 hr 8 min hr 68 min - 7 hr 21 min - 7 hr 21 min 4 hr 47 min Subtraction of time GBM 2012

Find the difference of : 5 hr 15 min 18 s and 2 hr 43 min 29 s Solution 5 hr 15 min 18 s hr 14 min 78 s - 2 hr 43 min 29 s 5 hr 14 min 78 s hr 74 min 78 s - 2 hr 43 min 29 s 2 hr 31 min 49 s GBM 2012

Jamie entered a movie house at around 11:05 a.m. If the movie lasted for about 2 hours and 10 minutes, at what time did she go out of the movie house? If Katrina was born on September 25, 1990, how old is she now? (Give exact age in year, month and day.) Problem Solving GBM 2012

Express the following in terms of the indicated units days = ____hours hours = ____minutes days = ____year min = ____seconds 5. 6 months= ____weeks GBM 2012

1. A parking lot owner charged P40.00 for the first 3 hours and additional P25.00 every 30 minutes thereafter. Malou parked her car at about 9:15 am and went out around 2:30 pm. How much did she pay? Answer the following: 2. The incubation time (days) of some animals are given below. Convert the indicated incubation time to hours. a. Chicken = 21 days b. Duck = 30 days GBM 2012

3 What is temperature? Temperature is a measure of hotness or coldness of something GBM 2012

Kinds of temperature 1.Fahrenheit scale (mercury thermometer) – used in the English system. - was invented in the early 1700s by the German physicist, Gabriel Fahrenheit Pure water freezes at 32 0 F & boils at F. Normal human body temperature is F GBM 2012 Thermometer is an instrument for measuring temperature.

2. Celsius scale (centigrade thermometer) – used in the metric system. - was developed in 1742 by the Swedish astronomer, Anders Celsius Pure water freezes at 0 0 C & boils at C Normal human body temperature is 37 0 C GBM 2012

Formulas GBM 2012

Convert the given Celsius temperature to its equivalent temperature on the Fahrenheit scale. Substitute 20 for C Thus 20 0 C is equal to 68 0 F GBM 2012

Convert the given Fahrenheit temperature to its equivalent temperature on the Celsius scale. Substitute -44 for F in the formula Thus F is equal to C GBM 2012

Analyze and answer the following: GBM Which is colder, 38 0 F or 38 0 C?
