Program Organization -A well organized, well administered program has a much greater chance of becoming a successful program. -Organization will save you a great amount of time. -A high level of personal and classroom organization allows you to focus on being a more effective teacher. -Program Organization includes: -use of student helpers -use of parental support and helpers -use of appropriate technology to maintain inventories, financial records, correspondence and student grades. -Establishing goals, policies and procedures BAND AND ORCHESTRA HANDBOOKS -An effective way to present students and parents with the basic requirements and procedures of band or orchestra. -Make sure all policies or procedures comply with the all-school policies and procedures that the school administration supports. Basic Elements: -A statement of philosophy and goals or objectives -Classroom policies and procedures -Attendance policy -Grading policy -Student officer or staff structure and duties

Program Organization Basic Elements: -A statement of philosophy and goals or objectives -Classroom policies and procedures -Attendance policy -Grading policy -Student officer or staff structure and duties -Any awards system (with any merit and demerit system) -A calendar of events for the year -Brief history of ensemble -General info about each performing ensemble -Uniform Instructions -Performance absence policy -A list of private teachers -Fundraising information -Info on special fees -List of upgraded instruments -List of college band directors and honor bands Pg201 minimal list

Program Organization Forms and Files: -The consistent use of a system of forms can greatly simplify your work. -pg File these forms right away or get student workers to do it. -Instrument inventory, music inventory, uniform inventory -Source: ASBDA Curriculum Guide -Answer mail and messages as quickly as possible. -Telephone messages and answer e mails on the same day they are received STUDENT AWARDS PROGRAM -Stimulates success in students. -Awards can be displayed on jackets, etc. -John Phillips Sousa Award, Louis Armstrong Award, National School Orchestra Award -pg204 -Cumulative from freshman year to senior year.

Program Organization Facilities and Equipment: -The quality of music facilities has a major impact on the educational program that is taking place in those facilities. -Facilities that are attractive and inviting, acoustically appropriate, adequate in size, and well supported with adjunct spaces and appropriate equipment will encourage and facilitate music learning. -layouts of great facilities pg Should have a high quality sound system for multiple uses. -When designing if given the opportunity, look at “Opportunity to Learn for Music Instruction : Grades Pre K – 12.” (Pub. MENC) INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT -Keep a database of instruments

Program Organization Booster Clubs: -Can be extremely important to an active program -Must be organized top to bottom -Can help with: -Fundraising -Marching Band -Football games -Parades -Competitions -Concerts -Festivals -Any time food is being used -Any other thing you can think of. -Uniform disbursements and hemming or mending -Scholarships -Private instructors -Instruments -Summer Camps – Drum Major, etc. -Vital part of an active program
