2 Forms of Energy – Kinetic and Potential

Kinetic energy Kinetic energy is movement energy This is energy that is being used for movement right now. KE = mv

Potential energy Potential energy is stored energy. This is energy that could be used in the future, but isn’t being used right now. PE = mgh

Potential and kinetic Most different types of energy can be classified as either kinetic energy, potential energy, or both. The sum of the kinetic and potential energy is called mechanical energy

Potential and kinetic Potential energy can turn into kinetic energy, and kinetic energy can turn into potential energy. This means that kinetic and potential energy are cyclic.

Cyclic kinetic and potential energy

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE PE > KE

PE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE PE = KE

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE KE > PE

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE Total KE

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE KE > PE

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE PE = KE

PE > KEPE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE PE > KE

PE = KEKE > PETotal KETotal PE
