Presentation transcript:

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 1 LHC Communication in Switzerland Review 2008 – Outlook 2009  Media impact First Beam, 10 September: very large coverage in all media (press, TV, radio, Web), Switzerland did certainly profit as a homebase of CERN, also very intensive coverage in advance of the event (mainly about black holes and the upcoming apocalypse)  Media impact World LHC Computing Grid goes online, 3 October: smaller media coverage  Media impact LHC Inauguration Ceremony, 21 October: quite a large coverage despite the shutdown of the machine

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 2 LHC Communication in Switzerland Fundraising for action plan:  funds received from ETH Board to build up a Swiss LHC Website (  letters of refusal from several foundations (reasons: too large international project, black holes not good for publicity),  promise of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research for a base funding of the LHC communication in Switzerland (about 30'000 Euro per year)

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 3 LHC Communication in Switzerland  Planned: Official launch of the website on 14 May (premiere of the film "Angels & Demons" in Switzerland)  Fundraising event after start up of the LHC (end of September/ October) to get money for other actions (exhibit, teaching material etc.)

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 4 PR Strategy Swissness (focus on experiments made by Swiss groups, technological innovations by Swiss hightech companies) Access to information (tailor made communication tools for specific target audiences such as teachers etc.) Networking (platform for all stakeholders from science, politics, industry, media, schools to promote dialogue)

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 5 Swiss LHC Website

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 6 Project Idea Travelling Exhibit – «Big Bang live» ● LHC simulator touring through Switzerland (20 biggest towns) ● Showing an attractive video: Back to the beginning of the universe – a journey through space and time from the perspective of an accelerated LHC proton; ● onsite specialists/documentations Sample of a simulator

Beat Gerber, Swiss Representative EPPCN – LHC Communication 7 Fundraising Strategies and actions  How to plan urgently needed fundraising?  What strategies for what target groups promise success?  What are the strongest arguments to convince potential sponsors to fund national LHC communication?  What alliances between public institutions and private economy and organisations have to be made?
